Holidays and Learning English

Summer is right for relaxing and having a good time. That can also mean learning English at McDonnell English Services intensive courses in July, August or September, or you might like to go abroad.

It is indeed possible to combine sightseeing, entertaining and interesting holidays with summer courses to learn and practise English. Nowadays, courses are available in English speaking countries in all four continents and you can combine learning with golf, walking, diving, horseriding... you name it, you can do it!

Jesús Marquinez spent 2 weeks at the English Language Centre in York . It occupies a beautiful Georgian Town House built in 1750 and is situated inside the 700 year-old walls in the heart of the historic city of York.

Jesús lived with 2 other students (German and Japanese) and a host family just outside the city centre. I spoke to him the day before he left -"We have classes every morning and a couple of afternoons and every evening the school organizes social and cultural activities. It's been great fun and I've met people from all over. It's very interesting for me to speak English to people from other countries, I don't usually get the chance."

Elena Gutierrez went further afield, living for 4 weeks with a host family while attending the Good Hope Studies English school in Cape Town.

-What can you tell us about your experience in South Africa, Elena?
-Well, it was fabulous. South Africa is a spectacular country with friendly people, great food and wine, and very cheap once you get there. I was staying with a middle aged couple and had my own room with en suite bathroom. They were great and every evening when I came back from class we would watch TV together or sit and chat.

-Isn't South Africa a bit dangerous to visit?
-Well, it's very safe if you take the right precautions. I mean it isn't a good idea for a woman to go out on her own at night. But every weekend I rented a car with some friends (Swiss, German and Japanese) and we toured the countryside staying at bed and breakfasts and visiting really beautiful places. Everyone was very friendly and we enjoyed great food, wine and beer. I would recommend it to anyone.
